OBJECTIVES
Completion of this chapter should enable the learner to do the following: 1. Explain the physiology of glucose metabolism in a non-diabetes state. 2. Explain the current understanding of the pathogenesis of diabetes. 3. Define diabetes types and subtypes, including genetic defects of the beta cell and secondary forms of diabetes. 4. List the relevant criteria for diagnosis and classification of diabetes mellitus, impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). 5. Discuss the epidemiology of diabetes. 6. Demonstrate familiarity with the appropriate sections of the Standards for Diabetes Education in Canada and the Diabetes Canada 2018 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada (2018 Guidelines).
