Nutritional Management OBJECTIVES

Completion of this chapter should enable the learner to do the following: 1. Use Canada’s Food Guide to do an initial assessment of dietary history, to ensure a balanced intake of nutrients. Assess body weight. 2. List each macronutrient, its energy value and its appropriate proportion in a healthy diet. 3. Discuss the general recommendations regarding the intake of macro- and micronutrients, sweeteners and alcohol. 4. Discuss the principles of nutrition therapy as they apply to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. 5. Be familiar with the tools used to teach nutrition principles to people with diabetes.
