Nutritive sweeteners

These sweeteners contain energy. They include the following: • Sugars o Brown sugar, icing sugar, white sugar, invert sugar

o Corn syrup, maple syrup/sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, brown rice syrup o Honey, molasses o Fruit juice and fruit-juice concentrates o Sucrose, glucose, dextrose, fructose, maltose, lactose, galactose and levulose o Dextrin, maltodextrin o Barley malt • Sugar alcohols and polydextrose o Maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, isomalt, xylitol, lactitol, erythritol, polyols, polyol syrups o Polydextrose o Hydrogenated starch hydrolysate (HsH) o Palatinit Up to 10% of energy intake can include foods containing added sugar, as long as the meal plan consists of healthy choices overall. Non-nutritive sweeteners These high-intensity sweeteners include the following: • Acesulfame potassium (ace-K): not available for purchase as a single ingredient • Aspartame: Equal®, Nutrasweet®, Sugar Twin®, Sweet ’n’ Low®, private-label brand • Cyclamate: Sucaryl®, Sugar Twin®, Sweet ’n’ Low®, private-label brand • Saccharin: Hermesetas® • Sucralose: Splenda® • Steviol glycosides: Stevia
