Building Competency in Diabetes Education THE ESSENTIALS
5-20 | CHAPTER 5
Although omega-3 supplements have not been shown to be beneficial, there may be a benefit to eating fish. Prospective cohort analyses have shown that intakes ranging from one to three servings per month to ≥2 servings/week of oily fish was associated with reductions in coronary artery disease (CAD) (35,82), diabetic CKD in type 2 diabetes (83) and less albuminuria in type 1 diabetes (84). For this reason, fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g. salmon, trout and sardines) should be consumed at least twice per week (85,86).
