Building Competency in Diabetes Education THE ESSENTIALS
TREATMENT MODALITIES: PHARMACOLOGICAL THERAPIES | 6-51
3. Diabetes and driving People treated with insulin or sulfonylurea therapy should receive initial and ongoing education on the ‘Diabetes and Driving’ guidelines to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia and any adverse events. Drivers should be aware of their blood glucose and not drive if their BG level is <4.0 mmol/L. If the person has needed to treat a low blood sugar, the person should not drive until their blood sugar is above 5.0mmol/L and wait 40 minutes before driving after a hypoglycemic event has been successfully treated. It is recommended drivers carry a meter/BGmonitoring device in the car and monitor BG immediately before and a minimum of every four hours while driving. Rapid-acting carbohydrate should be within reach of the driver while driving, while other snacks (containing starch and protein choices) should be available in the car. Refer to the “Diabetes and Driving” chapter of the 2018 Guidelines for more information (115).
