Building Competency in Diabetes Education THE ESSENTIALS
SELF-MANAGEMENT EDUCATION & SUPPORT: PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT| 11-29
Example of the process of writing objectives Educational objectives:
Following a needs assessment done in your weekly education group, it was decided by the participants that they would like an update on new technology available to them for blood glucose (BG) monitoring. As an educator, you begin your planning for this program for the coming week. You state your goal is to: “Inform the group participants about new technologies available in the Canadian market for BG monitoring”. You have numerous considerations as to what information you want to share with the group and the participants asked you to identify the pros and cons of each device so they can make an informed decision as to which device best suits their needs. This group has experience with BG monitoring so you want to gear the education level to their expertise. To engage all the participants, you are aware of different learning styles and the need to involve all the domains of learning. In this program, you decide to start with the new information, first to inform the participants and, then, to initiate a discussion. Your learning objectives reflect this: Following participation in this program, the learner will be able to: 1. Describe the purpose of the new technologies that are available in the Canadian market for BG monitoring. (cognitive domain) 2. Identify three new technologies for BG monitoring. (cognitive domain) 3. Discuss the advantage they feel one new device has for them over the device they are currently using. (affective domain) 4. Demonstrate the basic steps in the use of one of the new devices. (psychomotor domain) Behavioural Objectives: You have been working with Shan over the past year. During this visit, you note that Shan’s A1C has increased and he has very few BG test results. He mentions that he has a new job that is keeping him very busy and he has not had time to go to the gym. Using motivational interviewing skills and applying the concepts of the TTM, a collaborative plan is developed. Shan feels his current increased stress accounts for his lack of testing which he sees as resulting in his increased A1C. The gym has always been his source to release stress. His long term goal is to reduce his A1C, but his immediate goal is to reduce his stress. Following discussion re the barriers and enablers, Shan decided on the following objectives: 1. I will rearrange my work day to allow an hour, four days a week, to go to the gym. (cognitive domain)
