Building Competency in Diabetes Education THE ESSENTIALS
BASAL-BOLUS INSULIN THERAPY | 12-50
Pump Use in Canada As previously stated, CSII use is more costly in terms of monetary value than using BBI (89). However the advantages of sensor augmented pump therapy and the hybrid closed loop technology to the person with diabetes cannot be understated. The ability of this technology to improve their quality of life, through improved blood glucose management has reached new heights. Currently funding for CSII is provincially determined. Song et al found that pump use in Canada is more prevalent in the provinces where funding was provided which is not surprising. However an interesting note is that even in the provinces with funding for CSII the social determinants of health specifically income and ethnicity, played a significant role. Pump users tend to be from higher income brackets even in the provinces where funding is provided (89). With the recognized benefit to sensor augmented pump therapy and the emerging hybrid closed loop systems it is imperative that as diabetes educators we advocate for all our patients to have equitable access to treatment.
Outcomes are determined not only by device characteristics, but also by engagement and empowerment of the person using the device. (104)
