Objective for diabetes education

Levels of learning Survival/basic level

The knowledge, skills and motivation required for self-care to identify, treat and prevent acute, short-term complications of hypoglycemia or severe hypoglycemia. The person may or may not wish, need or be able to progress beyond this level.

Intermediate level The knowledge, skills and motivation required for self-care that results in at least an improvement in metabolic control, leads to a reduction in the risk of long-term complications and facilitates the adjustment to living with diabetes. Advanced level The knowledge, skills and motivation required for self-care that are needed to achieve and maintain recommended metabolic targets through intensive therapy, and full integration of care into individual life activities and goals.

a) Defines diabetes as the body being unable to use food properly due to a problem with insulin production/or use resulting in high BG. b) Identifies the major variables of BG control: food intake, medication and activity and stress/emotions. c) Identifies their BG goal target range. d) Recognizes the personal meaning of diabetes to themselves.
